ジャック・オー・ランタンはアイルランドの伝承に由来し、元々はカボチャではなく頭蓋骨を模したカブが使われていた。
物語では、生前悪行を重ねたジャックという男の子が悪魔を騙し、天国にも地獄にも行けず、死後はランタンに火を灯して闇夜を彷徨う運命にある。時が経つにつれ、この由来は忘れ去られ、ハロウィンの時期になるとカボチャを顔のようにくり抜いてランタンを作る風習が広まった。
このランタンには祖霊が宿り、窓の外に飾ることで魔除けの役割を果たし、悪霊を跳ね除け、善霊を引き寄せ、子孫を守ると信じられている。
一方、アジアでも類似の風習が存在する。例えば、中国の『西遊記』では瓢箪に魂を閉じ込める場面がある。
また、日本の神道では、瓢箪は神が宿る縁起物とされ、その末広がりの形から魔除けや無病息災、子孫繁栄、除災招福の象徴とされている。
